Nights

I think a lot of people wonder what our nights must be like with three kids under three. Most nights are actually a blur and things are changing but I'll outline them the best I can:

6ish PM - The babies go to bed. Sometimes I get Emily to sleep in the swing while I bounce around Alex but sometimes I need to bounce both. Emily usually wakes up once or twice soon after she is put down and requires some soothing. If Alex wakes up he can usually soothe himself back to sleep.

6:45 PM - On a weeknight this is when Greg gets home from work.

7ish PM - Greg puts Lizzie to bed. She gets a bath every other night. This usually takes about an hour because it's the only time of the day during the week Greg gets to spend with her.

10 PM - I make up the bottles, lunches, etc. for the next day and Greg helps me unload and re-load the dishwasher.

11 PM - I'm usually asleep by now and this is when Greg starts getting for bed. Some times Alex wakes up around this time and I feed him a bottle. I take care of Alex in the middle of the night and Greg takes care of Emily.

Some times Lizzie wakes up in the middle of the night crying. One of us goes in to get her back to sleep. This doesn't usually take too long however it stinks when it does because the babies are going much longer now.

3 or 4 AM - Alex has been teething so he's been waking up a bit more often but normally he might go until 3 or 4 AM until he wakes up for a bottle if he hasn't fed already. Some times I feed him in his room and put him back to sleep in the crib. Some times I bring him to bed and fall asleep with him after he eats. Usually he'll sleep like that for a bit but then get restless so I put him in the co-sleeper on his stomach.

4 or 5 AM - Emily wakes up for a bottle. Greg usually feeds her in her room (yes, we moved her in to her own room) then brings her to bed with us. She'll go right back to sleep if I cuddle with her (interestingly she won't do the same with Greg).

6 to 7 AM - This is when the babies usually wake up. They used to start this process around 5 AM but thankfully it seems to be changing. Lizzie is also waking up later if we don't have to wake her up. If we do, we wake her up around 7 am.

Things are definitely getting better around here but I am still waiting for the day when they will go 6 - 6 without waking. We don't even get it all the time with our almost 2.5 year old so I'm not exactly holding my breath.

I totally understand the "blur" part - alot of the time I couldn't tell you how many times I was up or how much, all I know it what level or rotten I feel the next day and how many hours it takes me to get past it in the morning ;) One day we'll be trying to get them out of bed and will be looking back at this time fondly. Or at least have all the stories of sleepless nights to hold over them :)

I don't like looking back at waking up in the middle of the night - I thought my days and nights were crazy, but you remind me that it is better than it used to be.
